Johannesburg, 31 July 2025 – Transnet SOC Ltd has welcomed the conviction of 26 individuals in the Xhariep District, Free State, for the theft of copper cables and other essential infrastructure, with damages estimated at R29 million.
The convictions represent a critical advancement in combating infrastructure crime, which continues to hinder Transnet’s operational efficiency and the delivery of a sustainable freight logistics network. Securing key infrastructure assets remains a strategic priority in ensuring operational resilience, economic stability, and national security.
This outcome also reflects effective coordination between Transnet, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). In September 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Transnet and SAPS to reinforce joint efforts to counter theft and vandalism across the company’s logistics network.
The convicted individuals were charged under Section 9(2)(a) of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA) for their involvement in informal gang-related activities, underscoring the organised nature of such crimes.
Sentencing proceedings are scheduled to begin on 29 September 2025 and are expected to conclude by 3 October 2025. The individuals will remain in custody until sentencing.
Transnet has reiterated the broader operational and financial risks posed by such criminal activities, including lost revenue, increased replacement and maintenance costs, and rising operational expenditure due to ongoing repairs.
