The Minister of Transport and Logistics, João Jorge Matlombe, laid the foundation stone on 17 August for the construction of the Ressano Garcia One-Stop Border Post in Maputo Province, marking the start of the modernisation of the main land border crossing between Mozambique and South Africa.
With an estimated investment of around 980 million meticais, the project includes the modernisation of the one-stop border post, a freight terminal and express lanes. The works are intended to improve the efficiency of the Maputo Corridor, reduce logistics costs and facilitate the movement of people and goods between the two countries.
According to Matlombe, the efficiency of the border infrastructure has a direct impact on regional trade, supply chains, the competitiveness of the productive sector, tax revenue collection and the performance of the Port of Maputo.
The new infrastructure is also intended to address existing constraints that result in long queues of trucks on the EN4, affecting road safety, fuel consumption, delivery times and companies’ operating costs.
