South Africa's pivotal role in global freight rail has been resoundingly reaffirmed following the election of Transnet and the South African Heavy Haul Association (SAHHA) as the new leaders of the International Heavy Haul Association (IHHA) for the upcoming cycle. In a major milestone for the country's rail sector, Nkululeko Gobhozi, Chief Engineer, Technology Management at Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager (TRIM), has been elected as Chairman of the IHHA for the next two years.
This global leadership appointment highlights Transnet's commitment to driving the knowledge economy. By championing technical innovation, international collaboration, knowledge sharing, and skills transfer, Transnet and SAHHA continue to advance heavy haul best practices on a global platform to accelerate the turnaround of the domestic logistics network.
The announcement was made during the IHHA Board Workshop, hosted in collaboration with SAHHA at the Transnet Maritime Training Centre in Cape Town today. Convened under the theme "Technology Enablement for Heavy Haul Efficiency," global railway giants and engineering experts agree that international collaboration and engineering excellence are critical cogs in South Africa's freight rail recovery.
"It is a profound honour and a significant responsibility to be entrusted with leading the International Heavy Haul Association at such a pivotal juncture," said Gobhozi. "This appointment comes at a defining moment in South Africa's rail recovery journey. Leveraging this global platform allows us to actively absorb and adopt international best practices, while ensuring that cutting-edge heavy haul research is directly translated into practical, executable solutions on our domestic rail corridors. Technology advancements present significant opportunities for the railway sector and incorporating those technologies into heavy haul operations to optimise safety and efficiency sustainably, is the next frontier."
Speaking on the strategic imperative of global alignment, SAHHA Chairperson, Brian Monakali emphasised that overcoming modern rail logistics challenges requires immediate action and world-class technical execution.
"South Africa's economic recovery is intrinsically linked to the performance of our freight rail corridors," said Monakali. "Through our active membership and newly elected leadership within the IHHA, SAHHA is ensuring that local rail recovery is anchored in international best practice. Today's workshop lays the technical groundwork, but our focus now turns to our major SAHHA Conference in November, where we will decisively move the needle from dialogue to delivery, implementing concrete engineering solutions to some of the sector's most pressing challenges."
The workshop featured technical updates from leading global operators including Rio Tinto, Australia, India Railway Service of Engineers, China Railway Society, MxV Rail, USA, and MRS Logística, Brazil.
IHHA Chief Executive Officer Antonio Merheb highlighted the mutual value of international cooperation and praised South Africa's foundational role in the global heavy haul community.
