Tanzania’s Minister of Finance, Hon. During the meeting, the bank indicated its readiness to continue assisting Tanzania in securing funding for the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), as well as investing in new projects in the mining sector and the construction of a major hospital project that will provide world-class medical services, the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE).

The commitment was made in Washington, D.C., United States, by the Vice President of Afreximbank, Global Trade Bank, Mr Haytham ElMaayergi, when he met and held discussions with the Tanzanian delegation led by the Minister of Finance, Hon. Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar, MP, on the sidelines of the Spring Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
He said Tanzania is a strategic partner of the bank and that Afreximbank is ready to work with the country to implement various projects agreed by both sides, which would be beneficial and stimulate economic growth and improve the lives of Tanzanians.
Mr Haytham ElMaayergi said the bank was ready to work with the Bank of Tanzania on a project to purchase and add value to gold, to continue sourcing funds for the construction of the SGR railway, and that it was awaiting the completion of the investment process for a major world-class specialist medical centre in Tanzania.
For his part, Hon. Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar thanked Afreximbank for continuing to support Tanzania, not only in financing the modern SGR railway project, but also in supporting the government’s overall budgetary operations, including its role as Mandated Lead Arranger in the budget financing transaction for the 2024/25 financial year.
He said that while the government continues to mobilise funds for the implementation of SGR sections six and seven through the African Development Bank (AfDB), it also expects Afreximbank to participate in the programme, given the importance of the project to the country’s economy.
He requested Afreximbank to further open the window for public-private partnerships (PPPs) to enable project developers and main contractors to participate fully.
In the health sector, he said Tanzania is ready to host the Africa Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE), which is expected to become an important pillar in strengthening health infrastructure in the country and across the wider region.
On petroleum energy, Hon. Ambassador Omar commended Afreximbank for its cooperation with the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), as well as for showing interest in supporting the importation of petroleum products for the period from May to July 2026.
He said the government recognises the importance of the arrangement in ensuring the country’s energy security.
The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Finance of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, Hon. Dr Juma Malik Akil; the Permanent Secretary and Paymaster General, Dr Natu El-maamry Mwamba; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Planning Zanzibar, Mr Aboud Hassan Mwinyi; the Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Mr Rished Bade; and other senior leaders from the government and its institutions.
