The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Prof. Godius Kahyarara, on 18 May 2026 visited and inspected construction of the section of railway connecting to the port, known as the Port Link, as well as the Morogoro freight stations and Bahi Station in Dodoma.
The visit by the Permanent Secretary for Transport was aimed at inspecting and seeing TRC’s readiness to begin transporting cargo from the port of Dar es Salaam to Morogoro, Ihumwa and Bahi, and then to other parts of the country and beyond.
While at the Port Link, Professor Kahyarara said: “The SGR railway reaches the Malindi area, where cargo will be loaded and transported by SGR freight train to Bahi. At Bahi, the cargo will be transhipped and loaded onto the MGR railway, and then transported to other parts of the country and outside the country. In addition, the Government, through TRC, has invested in this strategic construction with the aim of enabling the port of Dar es Salaam to operate efficiently by reducing cargo congestion, reducing vehicle congestion in various areas of the city of Dar es Salaam and, ultimately, eliminating congestion caused by trucks leaving the port towards Morogoro Road.
“The act of the SGR railway taking cargo from the port and transporting it to Bahi will bring very significant achievements, including increasing national revenue. With these achievements, Tanzania will become a leader in transport in East Africa,” said Prof. Kahyarara.
For his part, the Director General of Tanzania Railways Corporation, Eng. Machibya Shiwa, said that completion of the Port Link area, which covers 100,000 square metres, will allow the rapid loading of cargo from the port, cargo from trucks and cargo from private inland container depots, or private ICDs. This will increase the efficiency of the port in serving customers.
In another development, Elitunu Mallamia, Head of Relations and Coordination from DP World, the investment company at the port of Dar es Salaam, said the company is ready to cooperate and invest in ensuring that railway infrastructure meets the level of cargo growth so that cargo can move quickly.
Mr Elitunu added that it is time for railway sector stakeholders, including truck owners, transporters and businesspeople, to participate fully in ensuring that the railway sector grows in order to improve transport services.
The success of railway infrastructure construction will make Tanzania a leader in freight transport in East Africa.
