Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has introduced Ford Ranger road-rail inspection vehicles equipped with laser-based technology to support inspection and safety on the country’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
Adapted for both road and rail operation, the vehicles will enable inspection teams to monitor sections of the SGR more efficiently and respond more quickly when operational challenges are identified. Fitted with rail guidance wheel equipment, the road-rail units can move between road and track, supporting routine patrols across longer sections of railway, including remote and difficult-to-access areas.
The onboard laser-based inspection systems will support the detection of track defects, alignment issues and other potential hazards more quickly and accurately than conventional visual inspection methods. The technology assesses track condition by measuring alignment, track geometry and rail surface condition, including faults that may not be visible to the naked eye.
Laser inspection systems use high-precision beams and can detect small defects in track alignment while the vehicle is moving along the railway. The technology can also be used to monitor overhead railway electrification systems.
The introduction of the road-rail inspection vehicles is expected to help close inspection gaps by enabling TRC teams to reach affected locations more quickly. This is intended to reduce service downtime, support passenger safety and improve operational response along the railway.
The investment forms part of TRC’s ongoing efforts to improve and modernise railway operations. By combining road-rail inspection capability with laser-based technology, TRC is strengthening its track monitoring capability and supporting Tanzania’s alignment with international railway safety standards.
