Tanzania is continuing to build the institutional capacity needed to support its railway investment programme, including the Standard Gauge Railway. The visit to KORAIL’s training college focused on the skills required across train operations, infrastructure management, rail safety and the use of modern railway technology.
The proposed cooperation with KORAIL also extends beyond training to research and the exchange of experience. For Tanzania, the immediate relevance is the development of local railway professionals as new infrastructure is brought into service and the operational demands of the network increase.
Tanzania’s Deputy Minister of Transport, David Kihenzile, visited the KORAIL railway training college in South Korea to see how the institution trains railway professionals and uses modern technology in the operation of rail services, the Ministry of Transport said on 20 September 2026.
During the visit, the college’s management briefed the Deputy Minister on its training programmes for different railway disciplines, including train operations, infrastructure management, rail safety and the use of modern technology.
Kihenzile said Tanzania was continuing to implement large railway projects, including the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), and that South Korea’s experience in training and developing railway professionals was important to the sector’s development in Tanzania. He added that the government would continue to learn from and exchange experience with railway training institutions around the world, to build the capacity of Tanzanian professionals and ensure that investment in the railway sector delivers the intended results.
The Deputy Minister also undertook to strengthen cooperation between Tanzania and the KORAIL college in training, research and the exchange of experience.
