The International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (ITAC) has issued the following statement on 1 June 2026.
ArcelorMittal Rail and Structures (AMRAS), a division of ArcelorMittal South Africa, made an application for an increase in the general rate of customs duty on rails, from 5% to 10% ad valorem.
Rail is an integral product with diverse applications across various sectors, particularly in transportation infrastructure. It is essential in constructing and maintaining railway networks for efficient and reliable movement over long distances.
After considering all the information at its disposal, ITAC recommended that the general rate of customs duty on rails, classifiable under tariff subheading 7302.10, be increased from 5% to 10% ad valorem.
The proposed duty should be reviewed after a period of 3 years, following its implementation (unless otherwise determined by the Commission), to assess the performance of the domestic industry.
