The inclusion of railways in Ghana’s discussions with the IFC places transport infrastructure alongside commercial agriculture, local processing and industrial development as areas of potential cooperation. Expanding the transport network could support the movement of agricultural produce, minerals and manufactured goods as Ghana pursues its policy of increasing domestic processing and value addition.
The discussions have not yet resulted in any announced railway investment or project-specific financing agreement. Further engagement would be required to establish whether the IFC’s involvement will extend to railway development and, if so, which projects or financing arrangements may be considered.
Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama recently met with International Finance Corporation (IFC) Managing Director Makhtar Diop to discuss strategic partnerships aimed at strengthening the country’s economy, including the expansion of its transport infrastructure.
The meeting, held at the Presidency in Accra, covered the development of Ghana’s transport network, including railways, aviation and roads, alongside plans to advance digital connectivity through the government’s Big Push Infrastructure Development initiative.
The discussions also focused on expanding commercial agriculture in key sectors, including cocoa, oil palm and poultry, and the government’s policy to process at least 50% of Ghana’s cocoa beans, other agricultural produce and minerals locally.
President Mahama, who was joined by the Chief of Staff and the Ministers for Finance, Energy and Trade, outlined the government’s economic management measures and reported progress in reducing inflation and national indebtedness and restoring investor confidence.
Diop commended the President’s economic reforms and expressed the IFC’s readiness to support Ghana’s commercial agriculture sector and wider efforts to develop a resilient and sustainable economy.
The discussions identified transport infrastructure as an area of potential cooperation, although no specific railway projects, financing commitments or implementation arrangements were announced.
