Ghana and Germany Discuss Railway Cooperation as Ghana Pursues Rail Network Modernisation

The talks add Germany to the partners with which Ghana is discussing railway infrastructure and engineering as it pursues the revitalisation and modernisation of its rail network.

If the implementation strategy the two sides agreed to conclude takes in railway infrastructure and engineering, German companies could find a route into Ghana's rail modernisation, alongside the wider opportunities for German firms that the ministers discussed.

Ghana's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has met Germany's Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Johann Wadephul, during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, in talks covering Ghana–Germany relations and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

The ministers discussed economic cooperation and investment, including opportunities for German companies to expand their operations in Ghana, as well as collaboration in railway infrastructure and engineering as Ghana pursues the revitalisation and modernisation of its rail network.

They also exchanged views on migration and labour mobility, including the possibility of structured labour exchange programmes, and discussed the security situation in the Sahel and the threat of violent extremism. Ablakwa acknowledged Germany's engagement on Ghana's reparatory justice agenda, particularly on the return and restitution of cultural properties and heritage.

According to the ministry, both sides agreed to maintain close consultations, identify practical areas for further cooperation and conclude an implementation strategy for the matters discussed.
