With decades of experience in specialised rail engineering and rolling stock maintenance solutions across Europe and international markets, Italian firm Officine Meccaniche BBM S.p.A. continues to expand its footprint through strategic partnerships in emerging rail corridors. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the company is working closely with V.A.O.B Infrastructure Group, an infrastructure development and financing firm focused on advancing commercially viable transport projects across the region.
Ghana’s ambitions to revitalise and expand its rail transport system received renewed momentum this week following a strategic visit by BBM’s delegation, hosted by V.A.O.B as part of ongoing efforts to deepen technical collaboration and build sustainable local capacity within the railway sector.
During the visit, engagements were held with the Ghana Railway Development Authority to explore areas of cooperation in rail maintenance and operational readiness. Discussions focused on how BBM’s engineering expertise, together with the operational capabilities of V-Rail, the rail-focused subsidiary of V.A.O.B, could contribute to strengthening maintenance frameworks as Ghana prepares to commence freight services on the Tema–Mpakadan railway line.
The corridor forms part of Ghana’s broader strategy to reposition rail as a driver of industrial growth, logistics efficiency and regional trade integration. Ensuring effective maintenance systems and long-term operational sustainability remains central to this transformation agenda.
The delegation also paid a courtesy call on the Ministry of Transport. Honourable Joseph Bukari Nikpe noted the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing rail infrastructure development and facilitating knowledge transfer. Stakeholders additionally emphasised that coordinated collaboration between global engineering firms and regional infrastructure developers will be instrumental in building resilient, commercially sustainable rail systems capable of supporting economic growth, regional integration and trade competitiveness.
Looking ahead, V.A.O.B and BBM are exploring plans to convene a preliminary engagement in Ghana that will bring together neighbouring governments and private sector partners whose interests align with regional railway development priorities. The initiative is expected to provide a platform to identify collaboration opportunities and support the advancement of future rail projects across Sub-Saharan Africa.
As Ghana continues to modernise its transport network, engagements such as this visit reflect growing confidence in the country’s rail sector and a shared commitment to delivering efficient and sustainable railway systems.
