Botswana Railways has confirmed the receipt of 34 soda ash wagons from Transnet Engineering, where they had undergone brake modification works in accordance with prescribed safety and operational requirements. The wagons form part of a rolling stock consignment commissioned in May 2021 and procured from China as part of the organisation’s strategic initiative to modernise and recapitalise its freight fleet. The brake modification programme was implemented to ensure full compliance with regional rail operating standards and to facilitate the safe and efficient deployment of the wagons into service.
The addition of the wagons represents a milestone in Botswana Railways’ recapitalisation strategy, which is focused on restoring fleet capacity, improving asset availability, and enhancing the reliability and efficiency of freight operations. The new wagons are expected to strengthen the organisation’s ability to transport bulk commodities, particularly soda ash, a significant contributor to Botswana’s industrial and export economy.
