Kenya Railways Outlines Nairobi Commuter Rail Developments Ahead of AFCON 2027

Kenya Railways has issued a statement outlining planned railway developments under the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service to support Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which the country will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.

Matches in Kenya will be staged at Nyayo National Stadium, Talanta Sports City Stadium, and the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, with Nyayo National Stadium designated as a training venue due to its central location. In support of the tournament, the Government of Kenya is prioritising the provision of efficient transport solutions to ensure seamless access to and from the venues.

As part of this initiative, plans are in place to construct a railway station adjacent to Nyayo National Stadium, as well as a railway spur line extending from Nairobi Central Station through the Nyayo National Stadium area and Kibera to Talanta Sports City Stadium. The new infrastructure is intended to provide commuters with a safe, reliable and affordable transport option, while easing movement during the tournament period.

Kenya Railways has confirmed that notices were issued in advance to all encroachers along the identified railway corridor to allow for the construction of the station and spur line. The corporation is currently undertaking the eviction of encroachers as part of the process of repossessing land required for the development.

The authority has further stated that any illegal structures or property found within the corridor will be demolished or removed without further notice, at the risk and cost of the encroachers.
