Bulkstream Commissions SGR Edible Oil Loading Station in Kenya

Bulkstream has commissioned a Standard Gauge Railway edible oil loading station to support the movement of bulk edible oil from the Port of Mombasa to its bonded terminal in Nairobi.

The facility has the capacity to load and transport up to 2,000 tonnes of edible oil per day by rail. Cargo will be moved to Bulkstream’s 35,000-tonne Bonded Edible Oil Terminal in Nairobi for storage and onward distribution to importers, refiners and manufacturers.

According to Bulkstream, the integrated port-to-terminal operation is intended to reduce transport costs, improve supply-chain reliability and provide more efficient handling of edible oil between Mombasa and Nairobi.

Moving the commodity by rail is also expected to reduce the number of heavy road tankers operating between the port and inland facilities, with potential benefits for road congestion, safety, infrastructure maintenance and freight-related emissions.

The loading station and Nairobi terminal form part of Bulkstream’s strategy to develop integrated rail logistics infrastructure connecting the Port of Mombasa with inland markets.
