Early Landowner Access Enables Narok SGR Works as Kenya Railways and Land Commission Inspect Site

Kenya Railways reported construction between DK 168+520 and DK 169+400 in Narok, where a landowner has granted early access to facilitate the works. The proposed Narok Intermediate Station is at DK 166+500.

Geotechnical and hydrological studies from the design optimisation process informed adjustments to sections of the proposed alignment. Kenya Railways says the assessments seek to navigate geological fault zones and water catchment areas and improve constructability.

Construction is under way on an 880-metre section of the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) in Narok, between DK 168+520 and DK 169+400, after a landowner granted early access to the site, Kenya Railways has reported.

The works were observed during a joint site inspection by a Kenya Railways team led by Engineer Tobias Otieno and commissioners of the National Land Commission (NLC), held around the proposed Narok Intermediate Station at DK 166+500. Kenya Railways said in an update on 21 October 2026 that the visit reviewed progress on the ground and ongoing land acquisition activities.

The NLC delegation was led by Muruithi Muriungi, Chairman of the Land Valuation Committee, and the valuation exercise was coordinated by Joel Ombati, the commission’s Director in charge of Valuation and Taxation.

Discussions covered the NLC’s engagement with affected landowners, including consultations on land access arrangements. Kenya Railways said the team also acknowledged the importance of listening to feedback from Project Affected Persons, including on the proposed railway alignment.

Kenya Railways gave an overview of the technical assessments carried out during design optimisation, including geotechnical and hydrological studies that informed adjustments to sections of the proposed alignment. It said the assessments seek to navigate geological fault zones and water catchment areas, improve constructability and support the long-term operational efficiency and sustainability of the railway.

Kenya Railways said land acquisition matters will be addressed through the established processes as the project progresses.
