Leading Economic Indicators from Kenya Highlight Rail Revenue and Freight Volumes for SGR and MGR, December 2025

Passenger traffic on the Standard Gauge Railway increased from 258,600 in November 2025 to 344,391 in December 2025, with revenue rising from KSh 446.0 million to KSh 602.3 million. Freight tonnage via the Standard Gauge Railway decreased from 600.7 thousand metric tonnes to 569.5 thousand metric tonnes, while freight revenue increased from KSh 1.2 billion to KSh 1.3 billion over the same period.

Passenger traffic on the Metre Gauge Railway declined from 244,825 in November 2025 to 227,030 in December 2025, although revenue increased from KSh 13.0 million to KSh 16.2 million. Similarly, freight tonnage via the Metre Gauge Railway fell from 82.4 thousand metric tonnes to 77.5 thousand metric tonnes, with revenue decreasing from KSh 144.0 million to KSh 141.1 million.

Total cargo throughput at the Port of Mombasa increased from 4.1 million metric tonnes in November 2025 to 4.5 million metric tonnes in December 2025. Over the same period, export volumes rose from 445.5 thousand metric tonnes to 453.6 thousand metric tonnes, while imports increased from 3.3 million metric tonnes to 3.7 million metric tonnes. In contrast, transshipment traffic declined from 330.6 thousand metric tonnes to 293.8 thousand metric tonnes, and restows decreased from 16.3 thousand metric tonnes to 11.6 thousand metric.
