Kenya Railways New Tariff Boosts Freight Service Appeal

The Standard Gauge Railway Freight Service received a major boost this July as the Corporation effected a promotional tariff for bulk cargo. The tariff, which was effected on July 1, 2018, will see owners of bulk cargo enjoy a subsidised rate of US$0.035 per ton/km, 50% of the approved tariff.

Similar to the promotional tariff for standard containerised cargo which stands at US$250 for 20ft. containers and US$300 for 40ft. containers, the bulk cargo promotional tariff will run up to December 31, 2018.

Remarkable advancements have been made since the freight service was launched in January, with seven cargo trains now in operation on a daily basis; up from barely two trains a few months back. Reefer container services were also introduced at the end of June thus facilitating transportation of temperature-sensitive cargo.

To date, more than 800,000 metric tonnes have been transported by the service.
