The project addresses ageing signalling equipment at the TURA depot, which has been operating for more than 40 years, and forms part of the wider modernisation of Cairo Metro Line 1.
The upgraded system is designed to meet SIL4 requirements while improving depot operations and maintaining compatibility with the existing Line 1 signalling system. Provision is also being made for future CBTC integration.
China Railway Signal & Communication Corporation (CRSC) has secured a signalling upgrade project for the TURA depot on Cairo Metro Line 1 in Egypt.
CASCO has been awarded the EPC project to upgrade the depot’s signalling system. The project follows the company’s involvement in the Ramadan 10th City Railway project in Egypt.
Cairo Metro Line 1 has been in operation since the 1980s. The TURA depot is used for train maintenance and stabling and has been operating for more than 40 years.
The project will replace ageing signalling equipment as part of the modernisation of Line 1. The upgraded signalling system is designed to meet SIL4 safety requirements and support depot shunting, maintenance and train entry and exit operations.
The upgrade is also intended to improve depot entry and exit capacity, reduce train intervals and increase available line capacity.
The new system will be compatible with the existing Line 1 signalling system during the transition period. Interfaces will also be reserved for the future integration of a CBTC signalling system on the main line.
