
The Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania has unanimously approved the Ministry of Transport's Budget totalling 2.746 trillion shillings for the implementation of its responsibilities for the financial year 2025/2026. Of this amount, 125.4 billion shillings has been allocated for Regular Expenditure while 2.621 trillion shillings has been allocated for the implementation of Development Projects.
Presenting the Ministry's revenue and expenditure estimates speech in Parliament, Transport Minister Prof Makame Mbarawa explained that out of the recurrent expenditure, 96.7 billion shillings is for staff salaries and 28.8 billion shillings is for other expenditure. In addition, out of the development project funds, 2.45 trillion shillings are domestic funds, and 168.5 billion shillings are foreign funds.
In implementing the budget, the Ministry will continue with flagship projects such as the construction of the SGR Modern Railway and the improvement of the Air Tanzania Company (ATCL), in parallel with strategic projects such as the improvement of the Dar es Salaam Port, the construction of various airports in the country and the improvement of safety in water and air transport.
The government will also continue with the construction of four cargo ships in partnership with the private sector to strengthen trade between Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), through the Port of Kigoma and the Port of Dar es Salaam, where the construction of the ships is expected to be completed within two years.
In improving air, land and water transport services and infrastructure, the Government will implement projects such as the construction of an Aviation Academy, the strengthening of MGR and TAZARA railways, as well as establishing the NIT Lindi Campus that will provide training in the water, oil and gas transport sector.
This step demonstrates the commitment of the Sixth Phase Government to strengthen the transport sector to stimulate economic growth, increase employment and strengthen domestic and foreign trade.
