As part of the official visit of the President of the Republic of Angola, João Lourenço, to Japan, in his capacity as President-in-Office of the African Union and Co-Chair of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on Africa's Development (TICAD-9), two important Memoranda of Understanding were signed between the Ministry of Transport and Japanese Strategic Partners.
The first Memorandum, signed with Toyota Tsusho Corporation and Toa Corporation, establishes the basis for cooperation to carry out complementary technical studies, analyse engineering solutions, evaluate financing models and structure a future Design & Build contract for the construction of the Amboim Deepwater Port.
The signing, witnessed by the Angolan Head of State, reinforces the national priority given to the Port of Amboim, a project that concluded in May 2025 the Technical, Economic and Environmental Feasibility Studies conducted by the Port Company of Amboim, under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport.
At the ceremony, the Minister of Transport, Ricardo Viegas D'Abreu, highlighted: "This is a step that consolidates cooperation between Angola and Japan in the field of transport infrastructure and represents a milestone in the process of diversifying our economy. The Deepwater Port of Amboim will play a decisive role in modernising the national logistics network, increasing the country's competitiveness, and creating conditions for attracting private investment."
As part of strengthening cooperation with the Toyota Group, through its representative in Angola, CFAO Mobility Angola, a Memorandum of Understanding was also signed for the establishment of the CFAO Academy Angola. This initiative, which will be headquartered in Talatona, Luanda, represents a milestone in the training of national professionals in the automotive sector, reinforcing Angola's commitment to developing technical skills aligned with the needs of transportation and mobility.
The Minister of Transport emphasises that "the Port of Amboim and the CFAO Academy Angola are complementary projects, both structural, which materialise the national strategy of economic diversification, logistical modernisation and human resources training."
Toyota Tsusho Corporation, Toa Corporation and CFAO Mobility Angola already have a history of collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, particularly in the Namibe Bay Integrated Development Project, the execution of which is considered exemplary.
The two Memoranda now signed, with a duration of 24 months, define frameworks for joint work based on principles of transparency, cooperation and technical rigour, reinforcing mutual trust between the parties and consolidating Angola's role as Japan's strategic partner in Africa.
