Angola used its participation at the recent International Transport Forum 2026 Summit in Leipzig, Germany, to advance strategic transport dossiers, with rail and urban mobility among the key priorities.
A central outcome was the confirmation, with Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility, of the conditions for the formal start of the Luanda Surface Metro project. The project is described as one of the most important urban mobility initiatives currently being prepared on the African continent.
The parties are working towards formally launching the project in the coming weeks, marking a new stage in the modernisation of urban transport in Luanda.
Minister Ricardo Viegas D’Abreu said Angola is moving from discussions on mobility to the implementation of structural solutions with direct impact on people’s lives, the economy and national competitiveness.
During the summit, Angola also held meetings with international financial institutions, railway operators, regulatory bodies and industrial groups interested in supporting projects linked to mobility, regional connectivity, road safety and technological transformation.
Angola also expressed its intention to achieve full membership status in the International Transport Forum, positioning the country within global discussions on transport, connectivity and the financing of major infrastructure.
