Uganda Railways Corporation has issued a new Invitation for Bids for the rehabilitation of key sections of the Kampala–Malaba metre-gauge railway, under the East Africa Community Railway Rehabilitation Support Project. The procurement, released on 20 November 2025, covers extensive works across the Malaba–Jinja and Port Bell–Kampala–Kyengera corridors.
The project is jointly financed through facilities from the African Development Bank and the African Development Fund. According to the notice, the scope includes rehabilitation of track infrastructure, construction and refurbishment of passenger stations and halts, goods sheds, workshops, fencing, automated level crossing signalling, and improvements to Jinja Pier and Port Bell ancillary structures, together with associated dredging activities.
The works form a central component of Uganda’s ongoing programme to restore critical sections of its metre-gauge network, supporting regional connectivity and freight movement linked to the Northern Corridor.
