Uganda’s Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa, has directed Parliament’s Committee on Physical Infrastructure to investigate a collision involving a passenger train and a bus at the Namumira railway crossing in Mukono Municipality.
The accident occurred on 10 July 2026 when the train collided with a bus transporting students from Mwebaza High School to Jinja for a study trip. A teacher was killed, and several other people were injured.
During a parliamentary sitting on 14 July 2026, Tayebwa called for an audit of the accident and raised concerns about the measures used to control road traffic when trains pass through railway crossings.
The directive followed concerns raised by Mukono County South Member of Parliament Robert Maseruka, who called for integrated early-warning systems and physical infrastructure controls at railway crossings to reduce the risk of further accidents.
Maseruka also requested a nationwide safety audit of railway crossings and the allocation of resources to modernise crossing infrastructure.
Further proposals included public education on railway safety protocols and stronger enforcement of penalties against motorists who fail to comply with railway-crossing rules.
