Railway Safety Regulator Launches Rail Industry Awards 2026 to Advance Safety Excellence Across the Rail Sector
The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) is proud to announce that the Rail Industry Awards 2026 will take place on 28 October 2026 as part of South Africa’s Transport Month programme.
The Rail Industry Awards have become a flagship industry platform dedicated to recognising excellence, innovation, leadership and safety advancement across the railway sector in South Africa and the broader SADC region.
Nominations for the 2026 Awards officially open on 1 June 2026 and will close on 31 July 2026.
Hosted by the RSR, the Awards honour organisations and individuals who continue to advance railway safety, operational reliability, infrastructure development, skills advancement and industry transformation across one of the country’s most strategic sectors.
Since their inception, the Rail Industry Awards were conceived not merely as a ceremonial recognition platform, but as a strategic industry intervention aimed at strengthening the culture of safety, accountability and continuous improvement within the rail environment.
The Awards were established to foster a safety-led and high-performing rail sector that places railway safety at the centre of operational excellence, innovation, leadership and industry collaboration. They seek to reinforce the principle that a safe railway system is fundamental to economic growth, public confidence, operational reliability and the long-term sustainability of the rail sector.
At a time when South Africa is placing renewed focus on logistics recovery, infrastructure investment and freight efficiency, the Awards serve as a platform to showcase the individuals and institutions helping drive a safe rail recovery and reposition rail as a catalyst for economic growth, regional integration and sustainable mobility.
“The Rail Industry Awards were established to recognise the individuals and organisations that are not only driving operational excellence and innovation, but who are actively contributing towards a safer railway system for South Africa and the region. As the Railway Safety Regulator, we believe that safety must remain at the centre of rail modernisation, investment and industry growth. These Awards are therefore an important platform to reinforce accountability, celebrate progress and encourage a stronger safety culture across the sector,” said Brian Monakali, RSR CEO.
The Rail Industry Awards 2026 will recognise achievement across the following categories:
- Railway Rising Star Award

The RSR believes that recognising excellence plays a critical role in strengthening safety culture, improving operational performance and building a safer, smarter and more sustainable railway sector for future generations.
The Awards also provide an opportunity to celebrate the often-unseen individuals and teams working behind the scenes to keep rail operations safe, reliable and efficient across the region.
Further details regarding nomination criteria, submission guidelines and adjudication processes will be published through the RSR’s official communication platforms from 1 June 2026.
Through the Rail Industry Awards, the RSR continues to champion a safer, more accountable and future-focused railway sector for South Africa and the region.
