15 October 2025 marked the first anniversary of the commercial passenger operation of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Red Line, a project that demonstrates the commitment to actualising the Lagos Strategic Transport Master Plan (LSTMP).
In its first year, the Red Line has successfully transitioned from a conceptual project to a functioning mass transit solution, sharing tracks with the Nigerian Railway Corporation. Operations began conservatively with a schedule of six daily trips (two in the morning and four in the evening) and, through efficient management, this service was scaled to nine trips per day from February 2025. This incremental increase has been vital in building operational stability and public confidence in the system.
Public response to the affordability measures championed by His Excellency, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has been positive. The decision to reduce the single-trip fare from ₦1,500 to ₦1,000 end-to-end, together with the introduction of zonal fares, has significantly increased accessibility and boosted ridership. This surge validates the Red Line’s essential role in providing sustainable and cost-effective mobility for Lagos residents.
As the first year concludes, focus shifts to expansion. The Red Line is entering a new phase of capacity growth, with three additional eight-carriage train sets scheduled for delivery. This confirmed fleet expansion will directly enhance frequency and passenger comfort, easing congestion during peak hours.
The vision of an interconnected Lagos is also advancing. Plans are being finalised to connect the Red Line with other lines, unlocking the full benefits of an integrated transport system.
LAMATA remains dedicated to delivering world-class, reliable, connected, and affordable public transportation. Appreciation is extended to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his vision for public transport and to the people of Lagos for their continued patronage. The coming year will be defined by significant capacity expansion and network integration.
