The Transgabonais is the export route for Gabon’s manganese, and mining traffic made up almost all of Setrag’s first-half freight. Beating the tonnage target while halving main-line derailments suggests the track renewal programme is beginning to support more reliable heavy-haul operation on a line that has suffered repeated disruption.

Setrag, the concessionaire of Gabon’s Transgabonais railway, carried 4.9 million tonnes of freight in the first half of 2026, against a target of 4.6 million tonnes, with mining traffic accounting for 4.7 million tonnes. The operator also carried 111,319 passengers, which it said was above its forecast for the period.
Director General Christian Magni presented the half-year results to the company’s managers in Owendo on 10 September 2026, describing them as broadly positive and a reflection of the teams’ commitment and the effectiveness of the measures taken across the business.
Setrag reported revenue of 66.5 billion CFA francs (FCFA) for the six months, against a budget of FCFA64 billion, and EBITDA of FCFA18.2 billion, against a forecast of FCFA15.5 billion.
In terms of infrastructure, Setrag renewed 34km of sleepers and 33.9km of rail during the first half of 2026. The company said the work had improved track quality and reduced operating incidents, and that main-line derailments had halved compared with the first half of 2025.
No lost-time accidents were recorded among Setrag employees during the period, according to the company, and its prevention and inspection indicators remained at satisfactory levels.
Setrag said it would continue its work on safety, operational performance, service quality and modernisation of the Transgabonais during the second half of the year.
