SETRAG’s acquisition of a second SMD80 machine, for an investment of 5 million euros, marks a decisive turning point in the modernisation of the Gabonese railway network, with benefits for the State, the population, and the national economy. The purchase forms part of a broader modernisation strategy aimed at delivering an efficient and secure railway system.

The new machine will accelerate the replacement of wooden sleepers with concrete sleepers, ensuring greater safety and durability of the network. With a laying capacity of 800 linear metres in just 12 hours, the SMD80 shortens the initial work schedule by a full year. Replacing wooden sleepers with concrete 60kg rail sleepers will further reduce accident risks and strengthen operational safety. Completion of the programme is scheduled for 2027.

In addition to modernisation, the project creates social and economic benefits through 130 direct jobs in priority areas.

Passengers will be among the first to notice improvements. The reduction of risks linked to worn wooden sleepers is expected to decrease incidents significantly, leading to better punctuality and more reliable services.
