The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Dr Kayode Opeifa, has assured traders operating at the Iddo Train Terminus that no legitimately acquired land or business space will be lost as the corporation undertakes a planned facelift of the historic station. Speaking during a meeting with leaders of the Iddo Train Terminus Traders, Ijora Olopa/Ajeloro Fish Traders, Ifelodun Traders and Otto Traders, he emphasised that the redevelopment aims to improve safety, sanitation and operational standards while preserving the rights of lawful tenants.
Dr Opeifa noted that although some informal structures may be affected, the corporation intends to regularise occupancy, address cases of illegal trading and eliminate situations where traders have been paying rent to unauthorised individuals. He reaffirmed NRC’s commitment to restoring facilities at Iddo, including electricity and sanitation, and outlined efforts to remove criminal activity and rehabilitate the station’s environment.
He confirmed that rents will not be increased but stressed the need for accurate tenant records, with all payments now to be made directly to the Nigerian Railway Property Management Company Ltd. He encouraged traders to continue their economic activities without fear, highlighting their importance to the national economy.
