The Ethiopian Railways Corporation (ERC) has launched construction of the Bishoftu Railway Academy, a national centre intended to strengthen Ethiopia’s railway sector through advanced training, research and technology development.
Minister of Transport and Logistics Dr. Alemu Sime said the Academy will support the development of modern railway infrastructure that links major economic centres and neighbouring countries. He noted that a safe, high-capacity railway system is essential for economic growth, regional connectivity and the implementation of national transport and logistics strategies.
ERC Chief Executive Officer Eng. Hlina Belachew described the groundbreaking as a significant step in realising the organisation’s vision for knowledge development, innovation and the advancement of Ethiopia’s and East Africa’s railway systems. She highlighted the role of railway transport in supporting economic activity, improving social cohesion and connecting development corridors with regional ports.
ERC has already established a Railway Institute, secured a training licence and begun delivering practical instruction across various railway disciplines. The new Academy is intended to become a regional centre of excellence, supporting professional development, expanding access to rail transport and providing training to neighbouring countries, with potential foreign-exchange benefits.
Bishoftu City Mayor Alemayehu Assefa added that the Academy will contribute to local development and tourism, and confirmed the city administration’s support for timely completion of the project.
