CAMRAIL Strengthens Its Traction Fleet with Four New GL30 Locomotives

CAMRAIL, the concessionaire of Cameroon’s railway network, announces the acquisition of four new-generation GL30 diesel-electric locomotives, intended to sustainably strengthen the capacity of its freight transport offering. With an output of approximately 3,000 horsepower, these locomotives will be a major asset in improving service regularity across the entire network, from Douala to Ngaoundéré.

Currently undergoing reception and technical preparation, the four locomotives are scheduled to enter service during the first quarter of 2026. “With the arrival of these four new locomotives, CAMRAIL is reaching another milestone in modernising its production tool. This investment reflects our determination to better serve the national economy, further secure our operations, and provide our customers with rail transport solutions that are even more reliable and competitive,” said Joel Hounsinou, Managing Director of CAMRAIL.

Equipped with computerised control systems, onboard diagnostic devices and reinforced safety equipment, these GL30 locomotives will significantly help optimise train handling. They also feature more ergonomic, air-conditioned cabs, markedly improving working conditions for driving crews.

These acquisitions form part of CAMRAIL’s investment program, implemented alongside the State of Cameroon, with the support of AGL, CAMRAIL’s parent company. They will help sustain rail freight growth and shift a portion of cargo traffic from road to rail, for the benefit of road safety and the preservation of infrastructure.

“From a commercial standpoint, these new locomotives will enable us to increase the capacity offered to our major industrial clients, secure their supply chains, and deliver more competitive logistics solutions over time. They will also strengthen our responsiveness to seasonal peaks in activity and to the emergence of new mining and agro-industrial projects along our network,” emphasised Alain Minoue, CAMRAIL’s Commercial Director.

By strengthening its locomotive fleet, CAMRAIL reaffirms its commitment to supporting the development momentum of Cameroon and the sub-region, by offering businesses, travellers and communities transport solutions that are more efficient, safer and more sustainable.
