Tripartite Ministers Review Progress on Burundi–DRC–Tanzania Electrified SGR Project

Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania met in Kinshasa on 31 March 2026 to review progress on feasibility and preliminary engineering studies for the proposed electrified Standard Gauge Railway linking Gitega, Bujumbura, Uvira and Kindu.

Ministers welcomed the progress achieved, endorsed key technical reports, and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the project as a strategic corridor to improve connectivity, trade and regional integration.

Consultants have been instructed to accelerate remaining work and submit the final study and project outline in line with the agreed roadmap, with the Central Corridor continuing to coordinate the initiative.
