The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC), in partnership with the Tanzania Commercial Bank (TCB), officially launched the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) ticket payment card, known as the TRC Prepaid Card, during a ceremony held at the John Pombe Magufuli SGR Station in Dar es Salaam on 10 October 2025.
TRC Acting Director of Business Development, Mr Fredrick Masawe, stated that the aim of TRC is to ensure passengers experience efficiency, safety, and convenience throughout their journey by making payments easily through the new card.
Mr Masawe said that digital transformation continues to demonstrate the importance of the card, and through collaboration with TCB, TRC is ensuring it remains aligned with global technological developments.
He added that the card enables customers to deposit funds easily and pay for tickets without physically visiting a station. The prepaid card will be issued free of charge at all SGR stations and is expected to reduce congestion at ticket counters while simplifying the payment process.
Mr Masawe further explained that the card allows passengers to deposit and withdraw money securely and conveniently, and can also be used on Umoja Switch ATMs after travel.
TCB Acting Managing Director, Mr Jema Msuya, said that the card can also be used at various establishments, including restaurants and hotels, to enhance convenience for users.
Mr Msuya added that customers will earn reward points based on their card usage. The card will also be available across all mobile networks and through the TCB Mobile App.
