Tanzania’s Ministry of Transport has confirmed that the Standard Gauge Railway Mwanza–Isaka section, covering 341 km, has reached 68 per cent completion.

Transport Minister Prof. Makame Mbarawa issued instructions for contractors to accelerate works while maintaining international quality standards across the SGR network. The section, valued at approximately TSh 3.06 trillion, forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen national and regional connectivity.

The Minister stated that the investment is intended to stimulate economic growth, reduce transport costs and position Tanzania as a transport hub for East and Central Africa. The Tanzania Railways Corporation and contractors have been directed to increase the workforce and equipment to ensure timely completion and value for money.

According to TRC, bridge works are 90 per cent complete and track laying has reached 53 per cent, with earthworks, culverts and station infrastructure continuing. The government’s target is for modern trains to operate between Dar es Salaam and Mwanza by 2028.

Regional authorities in Mwanza have pledged cooperation in overseeing and safeguarding the project as implementation advances.
