The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has been recognised for driving transformative progress in the transport sector by enabling the efficient and large-scale movement of passengers and freight across both its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) networks.
This recognition was underscored during the Public Service Week celebrations at Chinangali Park grounds in Dodoma, held from 16 to 23 June 2025. The Minister of State in the President’s Office for Public Service Management and Good Governance, Hon. George Simbachawene, highlighted the strategic significance of the TRC’s infrastructure undertakings when he visited the corporation’s exhibition stand.
The construction of the SGR was described as a pivotal policy and development decision by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania. The initiative has positioned the country as a frontrunner in transport sector reform on the African continent and as a model for other nations pursuing similar rail infrastructure advancements.
Emphasising the need for inclusivity and sustained access, TRC was also encouraged to continue operating and upgrading the MGR network. Maintaining this legacy infrastructure is considered vital to ensuring equitable service delivery across both urban and rural communities, especially in light of varying income levels and regional accessibility. Rather than abandoning the older system, the approach calls for modernisation and parallel usage alongside the SGR to maximise national coverage and operational efficiency.
In addition to its infrastructure focus, TRC is actively advancing digital service delivery. This aligns with the Tanzanian government’s broader public service reform agenda and the 2025 Public Service Week theme, “Promote the Use of Digital Systems to Improve Access to Information and Enhance Accountability.” As part of this modernisation drive, TRC has deployed a range of digital platforms, including the Employee Self-Service Portal, the Procurement System (NEST), and the Electronic Revenue Management System (ERMS). These systems are designed to enhance internal efficiency, streamline procurement processes, and improve revenue management across TRC’s operations.
With major investments in both physical and digital infrastructure, the Tanzania Railways Corporation continues to set a benchmark in sustainable and inclusive railway development, strengthening its role as a critical enabler of national and regional connectivity.
