Twelve tunnels on the 270km Gotthard route between Basle and Chiasso in Switzerland are to be upgraded to accommodate wagons carrying 4-metre high semi-trailer trucks. At present this traffic has to use the Lötschberg route. A thirteenth tunnel will be replaced: the new $US350 million Bözberg tunnel
