In this quick catch-up filmed at the Luanda Infrastructure Financing Summit, Railways Africa Editor Phillippa Dean speaks with Eng. Achieng’ Akun from the East African Community (EAC). The discussion revisits progress made since the last interview in Tanzania, with updates across key regional corridors.
Eng. Akun outlines recent developments on the Uvinza–Musongati railway linking Tanzania and Burundi, where the Burundi section’s foundation stone was laid in August and mobilisation for construction is underway. She provides progress updates on the Northern Corridor, including the Kenya Phase 2B section, the Port of Kisumu works, and Uganda’s contracted section, now moving into implementation.
We also touch on current activity on the LAPSSET Corridor, which the EAC presented at the summit as part of efforts to secure partners under a PPP model for feasibility studies and future financing.
At the regional level, Eng. Akun outlines ongoing work to harmonise railway development and operations through the planned Railway Interoperability Bill. This includes upcoming regulations, technical specifications, safety frameworks and tariff structures developed in partnership with the International Union of Railways (UIC).
