BRIDGING THE STRAITS OF MESSINA

Italy has approved funding of 1.3bn to build the world's longest suspension bridge, at a total estimated cost of 6.5bn. Some 3.7km in length, carrying both rail and road, it will link the island of Sicily to the Italian mainland. The four-track, high-speed line is expected to carry 200 trains daily,
