South Africa: TRIM Opens Submissions for Ad-hoc Train Path Applications

Transnet’s TRIM has announced that submissions are now open for Ad-hoc Train Path Applications, in line with clause 4.3.4 of the Network Statement Volume 3. Applications for once-off traffic will be allocated capacity on an as-and-when-available basis.

Applicants are required to meet the same criteria set out in the standard slot application process. The primary difference is the shorter duration for application, evaluation and slot allocation, as these movements are typically once-off. Requests must be submitted at least 21 days before the intended date of service. The Infrastructure Manager will provide a positive or negative response within 1 to 14 days, except in the case of new train operating companies, which must follow the application process described in paragraph 4.3.2.

The ad-hoc process allows access to the rail network outside of the annual slot allocation cycle and is intended to accommodate once-off, urgent or unforeseen operational requirements. This includes:

  • Additional train movements during ramp-up periods
  • Increased demand during peak traffic periods
  • Material trains for special projects
  • Breakdown trains for emergency recovery operations

Interested parties are requested to submit applications in accordance with the guidelines set out in Network Statement Volume 3, Annexure 32.
