Algeria Launches Tender for 265 km Laghouat–Ghardaïa Railway Construction

The Algerian government has launched an open international tender for the construction of a 265 km railway line between Laghouat and Ghardaïa, forming a key section of the broader Laghouat–Ghardaïa–El Menia rail corridor.

The scope of work centres on the full delivery of a new-build railway line over the 265 km stretch, to be executed as a single contract package. The selected contractor will be responsible for carrying out the construction works required to establish an operational rail link between the two cities, within a 24-month implementation period.

The project forms part of Algeria’s wider efforts to expand and modernise its national rail network, with the Laghouat–Ghardaïa section acting as a critical segment in extending connectivity further south toward El Menia. Once completed, the line is expected to support improved movement of goods and passengers, strengthening regional integration and logistics efficiency.

The tender is being managed by the National Agency for Studies and Monitoring of Railway Investment Implementation (ANESRIF) on behalf of the Ministry of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure. It is being procured through an open international competitive bidding process, with participation open to eligible contractors from all countries.

Financing for the project is being supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), with part of the loan proceeds allocated to fund the construction contract.
