Rwanda’s economy grew by 7.8% in the first quarter of 2025, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics Rwanda (NISR). Growth was primarily fuelled by the industry and services sectors, while agriculture saw more modest gains. GDP at current market prices reached Frw 5,255 billion, up from Frw 4,486 billion in Q1 2024. Services accounted for the largest share of GDP at 46%, followed by agriculture (24%) and industry (23%), with net taxes comprising the remaining 7%.
Finance Minister Yusuf Murangwa acknowledged the progress but noted the figure falls short of the 9.3% target set under the National Strategy for Transformation (NST2), emphasising the need for timely and effective implementation.
Sector Highlights:
- Agriculture grew by 2%, hampered by a 1% drop in food crop production due to weaker harvests. Maize and bean production fell by 5% and 1% respectively. However, export crops rose by 3%, supported by a 16% increase in coffee output, despite a 9% decline in tea.
- Industry expanded by 9%, driven by strong performance in manufacturing and construction. Metal products, machinery, and equipment manufacturing rose by 22%, with non-metallic mineral products up by 21%. Chemical, rubber, and plastic products grew by 15%, while construction increased by 13%. Mining and quarrying saw a 3% decline.
