Sudan’s Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Saif Al-Nasr Al-Tijani Haroun, received a railway maintenance train from Khartoum at Wad Madani railway station on 20 July 2026, following the completion of rehabilitation work on the 174 km Khartoum–Wad Madani railway line.
The work was undertaken by Sudan Railways Corporation employees and marks a significant step in efforts to restore railway operations across the country. The rehabilitation took 40 days, while the line had been out of operation for four years.
Further rehabilitation work will continue towards Sennar and other secure areas of Sudan. Longer-term plans include restoring railway connections towards western and northern Sudan, as well as neighbouring countries.
Sudan Railways Corporation is now ready for freight operations, while preparations are under way to repair passenger trains.
