Luanda Surface Metro To Start This Year

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Friday, 7 February, between Siemens Mobility and the Angolan Transport Minister, Ricardo D'Abreu, as part of the visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, for the construction of the Luanda Surface Metro, as part of a Public-Private Partnership.

The Light Rail project is expected to cost around three billion dollars. Localisation targets have been set at roughly 30%. Work will only begin once a formal contract has been signed, however it is anticipated that the project will begin this year.

In addition, the Luanda Master Plan, has been approved by the Executive, provides for two surface metro systems, namely the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and the Rapid Rail Vehicle (rails), abbreviated VLT.
