International: British Steel Secures High-Speed Rail Contract for Türkiye and Launches 24-7 Production

British Steel has secured a contract worth tens of millions of pounds to supply 36,000 tonnes of rail for the Ankara–İzmir high-speed railway in Türkiye.

The agreement, supported by UK Export Finance, will see British Steel deliver 60E2 rail in 36-metre lengths to ERG International Group, which is delivering the 599 km project on behalf of the Turkish government. Once completed, the line will be operated by Turkish State Railways.

The new high-speed corridor is intended to significantly reduce rail travel time between Ankara and İzmir, providing a faster alternative for passengers and freight while contributing to lower carbon emissions.

The contract has led British Steel to commence 24-7 rail manufacturing operations at its Scunthorpe facility for the first time in more than a decade and has resulted in the creation of 23 new roles. Deliveries are scheduled throughout 2026.

British Steel previously supplied rail for earlier phases of the Ankara–İzmir project and confirmed that it met the technical specifications and delivery schedule required for the new agreement. The company is also engaging with ERG regarding the potential supply of additional steel products for the project.
