Green Light for Nairobi Central Station Overhaul Under Railway City Vision

In support of Nairobi’s broader urban transformation agenda, Kenya’s Cabinet in June this year gave the green light to implement the Nairobi Railway City Central Station and Public Realm Project—a transformative infrastructure development aimed at decongesting Nairobi and revitalising the Central Business District.

This flagship initiative, viewed as a critical step towards attracting private investment to the Railway City, will modernise the outdated Central Station into a state-of-the-art, multi-modal transport hub. With passenger demand projected to rise to 400,000 daily by 2030 and 600,000 by 2045, the new station will include nine platforms and enhanced access bridges, enabling the efficient movement of up to 30,000 people per hour.

Public realm improvements surrounding the station will unlock underutilised land, stimulate economic activity, and increase foot traffic into the city centre. The project is supported by secured funding for key transport links, including BRT Line 3, multiple commuter rail lines, and a Standard Gauge Railway connection to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The development is expected to drive job creation, urban regeneration, and sustainable growth, establishing the station as Nairobi’s premier transport interchange and a symbol of the city’s forward-looking urban vision.

As part of a recent UK visit, the President of Kenya toured London’s King’s Cross Railway Station, identifying it as a model for Kenya’s ambitions to modernise its railway system. He noted that Kenya is learning from the UK’s experience to develop a modern public transport network that will enhance access to services, resources, and economic opportunities.

Kenya Railways Corporation has issued an expression of interest for the Design and Construction Works of the proposed Nairobi Railway City Central Station, Public Realm and other associated infrastructure works.
