Railways AfricaTM

Issue: 5 - 2015

In this issue of Railways Africa, we focus on heavy haul across the region.

We speak to Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) executive manager: strategy and long-term planning Brian Monakali, chairman of SAHHA, about the upcoming International Heavy Haul conference to be held in South Africa.

We delve into Transnet’s heavy haul expansion plan - which aims to achieve 24 million tons in annual coal export volumes from the Waterberg area in Limpopo between 2015 and 2019 - in order to meet the needs of South Africa’s energy demand.

We look at the economics behind a sustainable public transport system in conjunction with South Africa’s Transport Month.

Howard Rosen, an English lawyer based in Switzerland, gives us insight into why he believes the Luxembourg Protocol will boost railway investment in Africa.

And, after the release of the Green Paper on National Rail Policy, we investigate the South African government’s proposal and the effects thereof, in the region, which the African Union deems its future centre of excellence for rail manufacturing infrastructure.
