Exceptionally heavy rain on 17 November in Pemberton, 152km north of Vancouver on the former British Columbia railway (BCR), flooded an estimated 160 acres of land adjacent to properties along Prospect Street and Collins Road. According to the Cuban Communist Party’s official newspaper Gamma, 19 serious and 320 minor rail accidents occurred in the country between January 2008 and September 2009. Head of the transport ministry’s rail sector Ricardo Aguiar blames the accidents on the “accumulated deterioration” of the railways over recent decades. On 19 April, “at least” 80 people were reported hurt when two commuter trains collided at San Rafael on the outskirts of Mexico City.
