Three railway employees have been charged with involuntary manslaughter after two trains collided south of Cairo, killing 18 people. Alstom and its partners have signed two contracts with the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) in respect of Line 3 of Cairo’s metro system. A consortium headed by Vinci Construction Grands Projets has been signed up by Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels to construct the second phase of Cairo metro Line 3, due to be running by October 2013. The U S Trade and Development Agency has awarded a $658,323 grant to Egypt’s ministry of transport in Cairo, to support the development of a positive train control (PTC) system for Egyptian National Railways. Cairo’s metro Line 3 is to be extended 6.2km eastwards underground from Abbasiya to Al Ahram, with four stations. in terms of a turnkey contract negotiated by a consortium headed by French construction company Vinci. The Romanian owner of Astra Passenger Coaches, Valer Blidar, is negotiating a contract for the delivery of 100 vehicles to Egyptian Railways. “We will finalise negotiations in about three months, and begin production next year. Commissioning has begun in Cairo of the first 15 of 40 Electro-Motive Diesel JT42CWRM locomotives being supplied to Egyptian National Railways (ENR). They are the first locomotives from the “class 66 family” to be delivered to a customer outside Europe.
