Canadian engineering firm Dessau has won a $38.8 million contract to conduct the preliminary and final design for the construction of a 170km double track between Algiers and Constantine in Algeria’s north-east. On 4 January, container transport by rail was launched between the Port of Algiers and the dry port of Rouiba, about 20km east of the capital. Algeria’s principal main-line is currently being electrified at 25kV 50Hz in terms of a national investment programme approved by the government in 2007. The Chinese civil engineering group CCECC has won three contracts worth €1.46 billion for new rail construction between Tissemlit and Boughzoul, Saida and Tiaret; and between M’Sila and Boughzoul in western Algeria.
