PUBLIC PROTECTOR PROBING PRASA

Tenders awarded by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) are undergoing “preliminary investigation” by public protector Thuli Madonsela, the Mail & Guardian reports. This follows allegations by the South African transport and general workers’ union (Satawu) of irregularities and financial mismanagement. Satawu blames the Prasa CEO for allegedly wasteful expenditure, “fraudulent activities” and the violation of the Public Finance Management and National Treasury Acts. According to The Sowetan, Satawu president Ephraim Mphahlele said more than 10 witnesses would substantiate claims of corruption, misconduct and “abuse of company funds”.
