METRORAIL & MINORS

Answering criticism by advocate Paul Hoffman (of the Institute of Accountability in SA), suggesting that Metrorail detains children caught travelling without valid tickets, Western Cape regional manager Mthuthuzeli Swartz was quoted in the press saying that children are not held but kept back only for as long as it takes to get their details.

Swartz said parents should impress upon their children the need to be responsible rail users. Many children continue to travel on trains without valid tickets, he said.

The penalty for travel without a valid ticket is currently R40.00.
